Teppline: Johan Backlund Family

January 2nd, 1867

Teppline:
For:  Johan [Backlund] and Carolina Wilhelmina Eckkel [Hedman] Backlund
This Lifescape Teppline is based on a compilation of family records and other historical documents.  Created by his great grandson Donald Clayton beginning on September 11, 2003.
[First posted:  2010.05.16 / Sunday – Teppline: Johan Backlund Family]

Notes:  Johan [Backlund] and Carolina Wilhelmina Eckkel [Hedman] Backlund are one of four sets of people most easily referred to me as my great grandparents – eight individuals in all.  Johan (John) and Carolina were the parents of Hemme Naratte Backlund Martin, one of my two grandmothers.  Hemme N. Backlund Martin (now deceased) has two surviving grandchildren: Donald Clayton and Frederick Martin Clayton.

This information is being made available so that the descendants of these two people and other descendants and friends of the families of Johan and Carolina might know and understand a portion of their lives.  It is also hoped that this information may contribute to a greater understanding of and appreciation for history.

“Johan Johanson” was born with the father-son name typical in Sweden at the time of his birth.  About 1850 he and his brothers and sisters decided to adopt the name “Backlund” for the family.  When Johan moved to America (circa 1867) he started using the Amercanized version of “Johan” – “John”.  Most records in America are under the name “John Backlund”.  He had a son who he also named “John Backlund” and used the designation “jr.” to distingish himself from his father.

This Teppline begins with the first clear Swedish connection to America and then records the names of various relatives that preceeded Johan and Carolina.  It is anticipated that the applicable charts for these people will be added to this Teppline.

It should also be noted that many early dates are not known and that some year information may not be exact.  The locations of events have been carefully preserved by the family, but in some cases represent old parish names and not the more modern place names.  Often cities and communities have grown to enclose areas that previously had their own names.

In a plan supported and financed jointly by the governments of Sweden and Holland, both Swedish and Dutch immigrants arrive in North America and sail up the Delaware River. This begins the modern period of Swedish participation in influencing the direction of North America by virtue of contributing to its population.

This is the marriage of HNB’s great-grandparents on her mother’s side.
MARRIAGE of Johannes ’Johan’ Andersson [Wallstrom] and Stina Ersdotter Wallstrom is held in, at         the, in Community, Sweden on October 22nd / 1822.
This family had five children:
Stina Caisa Wallstrom
aka:  Kristina Wallstrom Eckkel / Hedman or Stina Caisa ‘Kristina’ Walstrom
1821.09.10 – 1879.00.00 (58 years)
Johan Erik Wallstrom

1832.09.16 – 1922.10.09 (90 years)
Olof Wallstrom
1835.12.05 – 1911.05.05 (75 years)
Note:  This marriage is also said to have occurred in 1819.  The 1819 date would ‘legitimize’ the birth of             Kristina.  The above referenced exact date in 1822 is evidently correct.  Also refer to Slaktminnen translation         by HNB (1978) page 1.  DHC believes that Kristina’s birth and this date controversey is at the root of the             (Reverand) Waldensterm (not correct spelling?) controversey.   The Swedish relatives use two ‘l’s’, the             American relatives usually one in the spelling of “Wallstrom”, a name apparently derived from the                 Waldensterm connection.

CUNARD SHIPS IN THE LIVERPOOL – NEW YORK RUN – 1868

The S.S. RUSSIA

The S.S. RUSSIA, Cunard´s first Transatlantic screw steamer, was built by J. & G. Thomson, Govan (at the Clyde Bank Yard, near Glasgow) in 1867 for the British & North American Royal Mail Steam Packet Company (Cunard Line).  She was a 2,960 gross ton ship, length 358 feet and beam of 41.9 (or 43) feet, clipper stem, one funnel, two masts rigged for sail, iron construction, single screw with a speed of 12 knots. There was accommodation for 00 1st class passengers and 00 3rd class passengers.  She was launched as the S.S. RUSSIA on March 20th, 1867.
Registry: Liverpool.  Ship Type: Transatlantic Passenger Cargo Vessel.

In 1880 she was sold to the Red Star Line and renamed S.S. WAESLAND and lengthened to 435.1 feet and fitted with Compound engines and two additional masts (becoming a 4,752 gross ton ship).  She left Antwerp on June 12th, 1880 on her first voyage as the WAESLAND to New York.

In 1889 she was reengined again, this time with Triple expansion engines.  On September 11th, 1895 she started Liverpool to Philadelphia transatlantic service under charter to the American Line.

In 1902 this nearly 35 year old ship sank on March 8th after a collision with the S.S. Harmonides off Anglesey, North Wales.  Fog was a factor, two (2) lives were lost.

The S.S. SIBERIA

The S.S. SIBERIA was built by J. & G. Thomson, Glasgow in 1867 for the British & North American Royal Mail Steam Packet Company (Cunard Line).  She was a 2,498 gross ton ship, length 320 feet and beam of 39.2 feet, clipper stem, one funnel, two masts rigged for sail, iron construction, single screw with a speed of 12 knots. There was accommodation for 100 1st class passengers and 800 3rd class passengers.  Laid down as the S.S. SUMATRA, she was launched as the SIBERIA on July 2nd, 1867.  She left Liverpool on September 24th, 1867 on her maiden voyage to Queenstown, Ireland (now Cobh, also Cork) and New York.

She started her last Liverpool – Queenstown – Boston – New York voyage on February 7th, 1871.  On March 21st, 1871 the S.S. SIBERIA commenced Liverpool – Queenstown – Boston direct sailings.  Her last sailing on this service started on September 5th, 1878.
