1912 Teppline – January

January 1st, 1912

____________________________________________________________________________ 1912 ____________________________________________________________________________ This Teppline subject is for HNB – Hemme Naratte Backlund Martin and for GDM – Guy Dennis Martin:

The following is an index of documents for the Hemme Naratte Backlund document collection that are pertinent to her life in the year 1912, the year in which she both met and married her husband Guy Dennis Martin (GDM).

Year in review summary:

At the beginning of the year Hemme was a teacher in Denair, California, a small agricultural community in central California served by the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe railroad.  In 1911 the Santa Fe station had burned down and Guy was sent by Santa Fe railroad contractor J.A. Fellows to help rebuild the station.

Her older sister Hattie Backlund was working as a teacher in nearby Turlock, California.  Her parents and her older brother John Backlund were living on the family farm in Lasita, Kansas.  Another brother, Alfin Backlund and his wife Maude Backlund were living in Kansas City, Kansas.

At the end of the 1911 – 1912 school year Hemme leaves Denair to visit the family farm in Lasita for the last time before getting married.   She returns to Stockton, California in July where Guy and Hemme are married.  The rest of the year involves many moves pursuant to Guy’s employment with the J.A. Fellows company and that companies’ contracting jobs for the A,T&SF.

Maurice Merryweather invents folding

January 1st, 1912

~ This is a blogpost about the invention of proper shirt folding.

On an unknown date in 1912 Maurice Merryweather, while working for Woolworth’s in Lincoln, Nebraska, invented the art of proper shirt folding.  In 1914 Merryweather patented the idea as the “Merryweather Folding Method”.  Maurice Merryweather then licensed his (patented) idea and sold it to most major American clothing retailers, making millions for himself, and forever improving the effective display of retailed shirts.  In time the idea was marketed and sold internationally.

-7 Original Merryweather patent office application design.

-8  ‘Modified Merryweather’ design.  The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 1960 that this folding technique was covered under the original 1912 Merryweather Folding patent.

SPOILER ALERT: Read no further.

URBAN MYTH: This wonderful urban myth was first “revealed” in the September 1, 2015 comic strip RETAIL.  The work of talented artist and ideaist NORM FEUTI can be found here.
