List of American Nationals in Afghanistan 1958 through 1960

July 12th, 1960

Qala Bist.com Reconstruction:

The “List of Americans in Kabul, Afghanistan 1958 – 1960” has been retitled as “List of American Nationals in Afghanistan in 1958 through 1960”.  The list was first established on August 3, 2011 and continues to be “under construction”.

This list also contains the names of a number of non-American foreign nationals that were in Afghanistan during this time.

Information Sources:

A primary source of information is the publication entitled “United States Government Agencies in Kabul, Afghanistan – June 1960“.   As of August 19, 2011 there was no indication of the existence of this publication on a “Goggle search” of the web.  The copy of the referenced publication is from the Clayton Family Afghanistan Archives.

Additional names have been gleaned from the rather extensive collection of “Afghanistan Invitations” that were collected and saved by Lloydine Clayton during her time in Afghanistan.  These formal (and often informal) invitations contain not only names, but reference dates, for the “comings and goings” of various members of the American Community in Afghanistan during this time, and also fairly detailed map information about where people actually lived.  The later is very important as there were no street addresses for houses at the time, and comparatively few street names.

Another source for names are the documents and letters of Fred & Lloydine Clayton that have been saved, a few photographs with names, and finally my own personal memory, something that at this point is sometimes getting dim.  If there is anyone out there with additional names, please let me know.

This list is created to help clarify the information content in the “Going to Afghanistan” series and as an historical record to aid in an understanding of America’s early involvement in Afghanistan, American goals in Afghanistan, and the PEOPLE who were instrumental “on the ground” in implementing the goals.  In many cases the “wives and children” were only witnesses to the history being made, but being a witness is important too, and the witnesses lived their own type of history in the Afghanistan that was.

Assignments, Tours of Duty, Residents and Visitors:

On October 31, 1958 Fred W. Clayton estimated that there were approximately 600 Americans in Kabul, Afghanistan at the time, others were stationed in Kandahar, with a few stationed elsewhere.  By the summer of 1960 the number of Americans living in Afghanistan had significantly grown, it is difficult to say by how many.  In addition there were those that visited Afghanistan and too, there was the usual staff rotation.  The number of people on this list should probably exceed 1,000.  I (Donald Clayton) was one person out of this number.

The “typical” tour of duty (ICA assignment) was a period of about 2 1/2 years.  I (Donald Clayton) was in Afghanistan for 15 months, much like the American military who go there now.  Fred W. Clayton (my father) was in Afghanistan for three months less than a full two years.

The “stream” of visitors to Afghanistan at the time was impressive considering that Afghanistan had yet to be “discovered”.  This period was before the Peace Corps and the hippie invasion of the 1960’s.  It was mostly before paved inter-city roads and paved airports and certainly before the invasion of jets.  The logistics of traveling to or from, and especially within, Afghanistan was hard.  Living in, or visiting, the country wasn’t easy; especially if one expected American or Western-type conveniences, amenities, water, or food.  The nation was “foreign”, and that was what was good.
